Overview

Mt Meru it is the 2nd -highest peak in Tanzania towering at 4566 meters above sea level within Arusha National Park, offers a singular route to its summit, typically tackled over a span of 3 to 4 days. Many climbers utilize Meru as a preliminary acclimatization step before ascending Kilimanjaro. Unlike Kilimanjaro, however, climbers on Mt Meru must be accompanied by armed rangers. As you ascend, you'll relish a walking safari, encountering African buffaloes, zebras, and Colobus monkeys along the way.

Highlights

  • Minimum age of 10 years

  • Can start any day
  • Private tour

Itinerary

In the morning, you'll be picked up from your hotel or the airport and driven directly to the trailhead in Arusha National Park, which typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Along the journey, keep an eye out for giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife.

Upon reaching Momella Gate, your guides will manage the entry permits, marking the beginning of your trek to Miriakamba Huts. An armed park ranger will accompany your group from here onwards. As you cross open grasslands, you might spot giraffes and buffaloes once more. After about 2 hours of hiking, you'll reach the serene Maio Falls, a perfect spot for a rest and a picnic. Continuing your trek, you'll head towards the famous "fig tree arch" before finally reaching Miriakamba Huts in time for afternoon tea and snacks.

The hike from Momela Gate to Miriakamba Huts covers 10km, with an elevation change from 1,387m to 2,514m. Plan for approximately 6 hours of hiking through the diverse habitats of grassland and rainforest.

After breakfast, you'll ascend along wooden steps on a steep trail. With the increase in altitude, the air will feel cooler compared to the previous day, and walking may seem more manageable. In the rainforest, low-hanging clouds create a mystical atmosphere amidst the lush greenery. After about 2 hours of uphill trekking, you'll reach the "Mgongo wa Tembo" (elephant back) viewpoint at 3,200m, offering a perfect spot to rest and rejuvenate. As you continue, the vegetation transitions from rainforest to heather and moorland, and you'll likely arrive at Saddle Huts around midday.

At Saddle Huts, our team will serve you a hearty meal before an early bedtime, as your wake-up call will be just after midnight.

The hike from Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts covers 8km, with an elevation change from 2,514m to 3,570m. Expect approximately 5 hours of hiking through the habitats of moorland and heath.

Shortly, you'll begin your ascent to Socialist Peak at midnight, anticipating a challenging journey ahead. Guided by headlamps, the trail leads through bushland to Rhino Point (3,821m), where caution is crucial due to steep sections. After 4 to 5 hours, you'll reach the summit, Socialist Peak, greeted by the sunrise casting its glow over Mount Kilimanjaro and offering a stunning panorama of Mount Meru's crater. The descent retraces your steps to Saddle Huts, where you'll replenish with hot soup and tea before continuing to Miriakamba Hut.

Distance: Saddle Huts to Socialist Peak: 6km, to Miriakamba Hut: 19km

Elevation Change: Saddle Huts (3,570m) – Socialist Peak (4,565m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)

Outstanding Safari Guide and a Truly Memorable Experience with Godson We had the absolute pleasure of having Godson as our safari guide, and we couldn’t have asked for anyone better! Not only is he a highly professional guide who made sure we saw all the amazing wildlife up close, but he’s also an incredible person. He took care of everything for us and went above and beyond, even when our flight got canceled. He came back to pick us up from the airport, spent the whole day with us, and drove us back again—without expecting anything in return. Godson is kind, funny, and an absolute gem to be around. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone planning a trip to Tanzania. You couldn’t be in better hands!

Fantastic! Our safari experience was simply amazing and unforgettable. Godson was the best guide we could have ever possibly hoped for. He made sure that we enjoyed every minute of it and we did! He took care of every detail, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was organised. His knowledge of animals and parks, his patience and his politeness were second to none….and he was such good company too! We learnt so much from him about animals. When we arrived we said hi to a guide, but when we left we said goodbye to a trusted friend. So if you’re reading this review because you don’t know which safari company to choose don’t look anywhere else. Go with Godson and you won’t regret it..

The real Tanzania supervisor!!! Not a guide but a piece of the family. Godson is the best tour leader there is in Arusha. His great experience allows him to know every place to find the rarest animals in the different parks you will visit. It takes care of you for every logistical, health and cultural need. Always punctual and willing to drive endless hours to satisfy your thirst for knowledge and discovery. There can be no Safari without Godson in Tanzania: the two things are closely linked. Two of the most magical safari days! If you're looking for a safari guide in Tanzania, Godson is the man. He patiently answered thousands of our questions, knows everything about the physiology and habits of the animals in the park and unerring seemed to lead us always to the most amazing animal sightings. He also seems to have a magic presence with the animals, while they run from other trucks time after time they came right over to ours, for the most up close and personal encounters.

Beyond amazing, and so much better than we expected! I cannot convey how incredible this tour was! We spent 3 days in Tarangire National Park and took THOUSANDS of photos. Godson was an amazing guide, knowing just where and when to take us to specific locations. He was also extremely patient and beyond knowledgeable; answering our constant barrage of questions. I highly recommend him and Martial Adventure Safaris for an unforgettable and spectacular safari experience.

An unforgettable experience When we decided to do our Safari in Tanzania for the first time in our life, our travel agent told us that he wouldn’t had sold us the trip if there wasn’t Godson free from other tours. Luckly he was free and then we understood why our travel agent said that to us: even if he saw all the beauties of the savanna many many times I could see his eyes gleaming like ours when we encountered lions and other animals. He is really passionate about nature and he guided us to the best spots in the park that let me took these amazing pics. Godson is absolutely the best guide for the safari in Tanzania!

5* Tanzanian Safari Experience! Could not recommend doing the Wildlife Safari Tour enough! As a female solo traveller, I was understandably nervous going abroad alone for the first time but Godson put me right at ease and we had the most incredible time. Having done safaris in other parts of Africa before, I knew what to expect but this was like nothing else I could ever have imagined. The game we saw from day one was simply amazing and I couldn't believe how lucky we got. The service, the food, the experience, literally everything was just perfect and I'm so glad I did it. Would definitely do this again! Thank you, Godson!!
